advice for potential guitarists

If you or someone you love is thinking about taking up guitar, there are some things you (or they) need to be aware of before making the leap.

You may have heard that a guitar is a surefire way to impress the ladies. In the rare instance that this ends up being true, it will not be worth it. When I was 15, I learned how to play “I Want It That Way”. I played the intro, the girl went squee, I stopped playing, and she never made eye contact with me again. The worst part? I will never unlearn that wretched array of noise.

Moral 1: Don’t learn guitar to impress girls. You will do dark and terrible things that taint your soul and have no long-term benefit.

At some point in your journey, someone will inform you that a famous person can’t read music. In my case, it was my mom telling me about Paul McCartney. Perhaps they are trying to make you feel better as you struggle through Mel Bay’s Guitar Method Grade 1, or maybe they just want you to put down the guitar and play Mario. You will be tempted to deem the skill irrelevant to rock and abandon it. Resist! Years later, when you’re struggling to read the Mario score like a first grader reading a story problem aloud, you will wonder which closet you threw the Mel Bay book into.

Moral 2: Learn to sight read. It sucks but it makes learning stuff easier over the long haul.

About three to six months in, you’ll find yourself frustrated. All songs will fall into one of two categories: Too Boring or Too Hard. If you don’t quit right then, you’ll find yourself back in that place annually. This is normal – good, in fact. Something to aim for. It means you have gained a level – you have mastered one set of skills and are ready for something more difficult. Push yourself conquer the Too Hard stuff, because it will become Too Boring, which tells you that you’re growing.

Moral 3: Seek challenges. You will improve faster than you will if you try to stay comfortable.
