The Lonely

The Lonely (buy!)

I told myself “no synthesizers!”, which made it very hard not to fall back on synthesizers to get what I wanted. I love putting those kinds of arbitrary restraints on myself because they lead to much stronger pieces than when I can just throw random sounds in because I feel like it. I really like this one.

What does “no synth” mean? Did you play all the instruments yourself?

Well, I don’t count the fake drums as “synth” simply because I don’t have any way to do real drums at the moment. Other than that, I stuck to guitar and bass.

I’m pretty loose about my definition of “play”, though. When I do use synths, I typically bang out the part on my little keyboard and then make it sound nice by using the mouse to move and resize the notes. Technically, there is some playing involved — it’s just pretty bad. Eventually, I would like to acquire a full-size keyboard and actually teach myself how to play because it’s just more efficient.

Gotcha. Real drums are way more fun to play. Loud though. Synths do help prevent practice studio costs.

100% agreement. I set my drums up at my parents house a few weeks ago, and it was a blast. I’m debating trying to “book” their house for a weekend (i.e. hope they go out of town) and do some real rock n roll, what with the ancient mixing board and my sweet microphone collection.
